Thanks Shamal for taking Zoe and me to see Rise, Ride, Roar, the film documenting David Byrne’s 2009 tour here in London tonight at this amazing local London theatre:
I saw this show live twice in 2009 and was surprised how much I enjoyed the movie. Beautifully visually and sonically. Moving. When I saw the show live and saw the dancers it was jarring in a “woah there are really modern dancers through the whole show that’s damn arty” sort of way. It actually wins you over quickly live but in the movie you realize how ballsy it was (in addition to being artful in a genuine sort of way). David Byrne took old and new material and built a real *show* around it, the entire band/entourage worked for it but had a blast doing it. The movie itself is a great document of the piece; I left so stoked someone captured it all on film and I not only had a chance to experience for the third time, close up, but to share it with others, too.
As for now, I’m fresh off my second redeye of the week so… that’s all I’ve got.
